Artists resist climate despair through radical acts of community, beauty, and hope in an era of great and terrifying change. The Thinning of the Veil captures their creative perseverance.

The Thinning of the Veil is a poetic feature length documentary. The film explores, through the gaze of filmmaker Millefiore Clarkes, the inspirational work, performances, and personal journeys of four Canadian artists who are demonstrating resilience in the face of the rapidly escalating climate crisis. The film also interweaves a tapestry of international artwork and performance, expressing a global movement of resistance to despair and extinction.

On Epikwitk/PEI, an eroding sandstone island in the Atlantic Ocean, Millefiore observes the mounting evidence of her home’s ecosystem in decline. Her young son grows against this backdrop of uncertainty. Her elderly artist father passes away, leaving her with a sense of loss too unwieldy to carry alone. She sets out to find like-spirited creators, connected by community and land, who are using their artistry to defy the narrative of this era of loss.

Dancer and choreographer Sarah Prosper, puppeteer and scenographer Ian McFarlane, musician Tamara Lindeman (The Weather Station), and storyteller shalan joudry, are each fighting fiercely for a better world, using art, beauty, community and metaphor as their tools. Through their chosen mediums, these artists bring their audiences into a communal space to process grief, dispel anxiety, and begin to envision a brighter future. As Sarah Prosper says “We need healing. We need ritual.” Each of these artists are channeling the pain and loss of our time, by tuning into the chord of mystery that resonates with heightened profundity when death is at hand. This is the historical moment that we are all traversing. And inside the sorrow is wonder. Inside the loss is the potential for rebirth.
