One main project currently on the go is a feature documentary and web series entitled 'The Telling'. It is a poetic portrait of a place and its
people.
The Telling Overview:
There is something about the nature of Island, something about the circumference of water that contains a place and people. The Telling, a feature length documentary film and web series, will explore the perspectives of a diverse array of individuals living on Prince Edward Island through the stories they tell. From small-town politicians to lobster fishermen, from homeless people to teenagers at the mall, from newcomers to natives of PEI, a chorus of voices will emerge. By juxtaposing seemingly dissimilar individuals, each bound to this isolated landscape, a tapestry of the human community will emerge.
The Telling was in production from May 1st 2009 to September1st, 2010, with a completion date of Fall 2012. It is a feature documentary that will also find a home on the internet. The feature doc will be edited into short form episodes that will be uploaded to its own website, inviting the engagement of its audience. The Telling is Directed, Produced, Filmed, and Edited by Millefiore Clarkes.
Prince Edward Island is a unique place. This smallest province in Canada is a microcosm of human activity. It is a place where old and new worlds wrestle in the struggle for identity. It is a place where the traditional values and slower pace of a past age still hold fast. It is also a place where young people crave the dynamism of urban culture and political leaders look to new economic models to solve social issues. Each character within this diverse yet contained landscape contributes to the total picture of this small world. It is easy to see the connecting threads between seemingly divergent lifestyles here. The teenager at the punk-rock show may have just come from milking a cow at the family farm. A top business-executive on his way to the office may very well stop to talk to Charlie, the town homeless man. There is a cadence to life on PEI and a human scale that allows for all individuals, no matter their demographic, to live in close contact with one another. Uncovering this unique, and perhaps old-fashioned culture as it wrestles with change is the theme of The Telling. It is a struggle for understanding that people from around the world can relate to.
The Telling is being made with the amazing support of Mughisha Enterprises, The Island Media Arts Co-op, The National Film Board of Canada FAP Grant, and The PEI Council of the Arts.
